This course examined the history of policing in the United States. It began with its 19th-century origins, modeled after the practices in England, and examined the differences in the North, South, and West of the early United States. It investigated the rise of the first formal police departments in the late 19th century, where the first Black men would serve on a number of forces. Then it examined the history of the professionalization movement and the creation of the FBI. Attention was given to the complex relation of policing to social movements and issues of racial justice. Readings included reports of commissions of the U.S. federal government on social issues.
